PCM - Phase Contrast Microscopy

 

Method: NIOSH 7400

Phase Contrast Microscopy is used primarily for estimating asbestos concentrations in air, though PCM does not differentiate between asbestos and other fibers. It is used to show compliance with limits set by OSHA and other regulatory agencies.

PLM - Polarized Light Microscopy

 

Methods: EPA-600/M4-82-020,
EPA/600/R-93/116 (CDB reporting)

Polarized Light Microscopy is used for identification of the individual types asbestos in bulk insulation.

TEM - Transmission Electron Microscopy

 

Methods: AHERA, YAMATE, NIOSH 7402

Transmission Electron Microscope is only instrument which can routinely identify and quantitate the percentage of the different asbestos fibers in water samples The TEM AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) Method is the required method of analysis by the EPA for clearance air samples in schools.  Being the only fully promulgated TEM air method with a specific pass fail criteria, it has become the gold standard for final air clearance.

TEM / PLM- Gravimetric
